Stephanie L. Furness, LCSW. Stephanie is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) who received her Masters of Social Work (MSW) from Rutgers University in 2007. Her counseling experience is derived from work in psychiatric hospitals and community settings. Her focus has mainly been on serving adolescents and young adults – particularly those with histories of trauma. She has done extensive work concerning LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning) issues, including counseling, support groups, advocacy work and education.
Stephanie believes that creating a strong relationship in which her clients feel safe and understood is paramount. She tailors her therapeutic approach based upon each client. Her primary methods are cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) and mindfulness-based approaches. This means that she concentrates on thoughts and how they affect emotions and behavior. She is not passive in the therapeutic process; rather, she collaborates with and empowers her clients. From the very first session, she encourages her clients to establish their goals for therapy. Depending upon her clients’ preferences, she often employs mindfulness techniques borrowed from Zen Buddhism – using the power of the present moment to deepen therapeutic benefits. She also employs some expressive arts techniques. She offers individual counseling to adolescents and adults, as well as couples counseling. |
